Drive north to Egypt’s second city, Alexandria, located on the Mediterranean coast, to visit the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the vast modern library and cultural repository built on the seashore in commemoration of the ancient Library of Alexandria. With space for 8 million books and the largest collection of French language books in the Arab world, it is the only external back-up of the Internet Archive, containing 10 billion web pages from the years 1996 – 2001. The library is a symbol of Egypt’s ambitions in the field of learning and technology and a powerful indicator of the scope of Africa’s potential.
Lunch will be at the Fish Market, Alexandria’s most famous fish restaurant. Alexandrian cuisine is famed for its Fish dishes and you can try local specialities while enjoying breath-taking views of the harbour and out into the Mediterranean. After lunch, explore The Qaitbay Citadel, a 15th century fortress overlooking the harbour, built on the exact site of the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria. Visit the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, the largest and most important Greco-Roman necropolis in Egypt, considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages.
Finally, enjoy the imperial splendor of Pompey’s Pillar, the largest triumphal column of Roman Egypt, constructed in honor of Emperor Diocletian’ suppression of an Alexandrian revolt in 297 AD. Finally we will head back to Cairo at around 4pm.
