Partnering with Senegal to Digitally Unify the Country
The 2009 eLearning Africa conference in Senegal is expected to draw more than 1500 participants, with an estimated 80 percent coming from African countries. The conference organisers cordially thank the ST Microelectronics Foundation, Switzerland, for supporting African participation in 2009. With ICT learning projects in 16 countries - among them Congo Democratic Republic, Ethiopia, Tunisia, Morocco, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Uganda and Senegal - the foundation maintains a strong position in Africa to help people bridge the digital divide.
In June 2008, the ST Foundation launched a new partnership with ANEJ (Agence National pour l'Emploi des Jeunes – National Agency for the Employment of Youth) in eLearning Africa’s 2009 host country, Senegal. Digital Unify (DU), which is now being employed in Senegal, is the ST Foundation’s major programme.
The Digital Unify programme provides both the technology as well as the basic training free of cost to those who have no knowledge of how to use a personal computer and access the Internet. In June 2008 its pilot phase consisted of the equipment located in six centres: Grand Dakar, Yarak, Yoff, Nimzat, Bignona and Marsassoum. The three-year project is meant to train over 50,000 people altogether. Future teachers for the pilot phase have already completed their training under the guidance of ST Italy voluntary trainers and labs were fully operational as of July 2008.
ST Foundation is an active member of the UN Global Alliance for ICT and Development (GAID), which brings together governments, international organisations, businesses, NGOs and academia to share cutting-edge ideas, innovative knowledge, experiences, expertise and best practice with the aim of promoting the effective use of ICT for educational development.
