Mel Siegel is a member of the research faculty of the Robotics Institute, School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), USA. He is research director of the Sensors, Measurement, and Control Laboratory, and educational director of International and Professional Program Development. Before joining the CMU faculty he was director of research and development at an instrumentation company, and before that a university faculty member in physics, Between earning his undergraduate and graduate degrees he was a US Peace Corps volunteer teaching physics and maths at Achimota School in Ghana. Ever since he has planned, after retiring from research, to apply technology to sustainable development. His good fortune is that universities' new interest in globalization is allowing him to pursue this lifelong goal without changing careers again.
